Exhibition: 3 – 18 June, 2017
An exhibition of recent photographic and assemblage works made during Benjamin Jones’ graduate fellowship at Spike Island in 2016–17.
The work in this show reflects an ongoing inquiry into how we compartmentalise our past experiences through reflection. Objects, places and actions associated with personal histories reveal a culturally understood set of symbols, mediating perception of the personal and public. Through recasting these as photographs with their own physical presence, a more somber relationship between tropes of youth and processes of change become visible. The illusory capabilities of photographic documentation play an important role is these works, while their materiality explores the sculptural capacity of the photographic medium.
